What Vinyl Records Are Worth Money? A Quick Guide for Sellers
Not all vinyl records are valuable – but some can be worth far more than you might expect.
If you’re sorting through a collection, here’s what to look out for. Check the condition of the records and sleeves. Condition is very important to any potential buyer. A buyer will want an overall number of records, a description of the condition and where they are currently stored. S/he may ask you to send a few images of the collection on WhatsApp of another medium. It all helps in forming an understanding of what is on offer.
1. Best Sellers
Original releases are often the most valuable, especially from iconic artists like The Beatles, Taylor Swift, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and many more. However, it isn’t an exact science and each record needs to evaluated. Most best selling records have been reissued many times and can look exactly like the original.
2. Rare Genres
Certain genres tend to perform better in the resale market: Classical records can be quite specialised and the market tends to favour solo cello and violin releases although it varies enormously.
- Jazz
- Reggae
- Punk
- Psych
- Indie
- Rock
- Folk
These often have limited pressings or strong collector demand.
3. Limited Editions & Small Runs
Records released in small quantities – especially from independent labels can hold significant value. Limited pressing on small independent labels especially during the Punk era can be collectable especially if they have any additional extra still included. Likewise, many records got limited runs on coloured vinyl and there is a nice market for these. As ever, condition is everything. Labels to look out for are Rough Trade, Small Wonder, Creation and many others.
4. Underground & Niche Artists
Lesser-known artists can sometimes be more valuable than mainstream ones, particularly if they have a cult following. Some artists/bands self release on their own label and have limited runs or even fan club specials. Sometimes these releases are hand numbered or signed by the artist.
What’s Usually Less Valuable?
In general, mass-produced chart pop and easy listening records tend to have lower resale value. If it is a chart record then there will be plenty of copies available so there isn’t much appeal.
